Simply Cozy

ootd-10292014-1

I took these photos on a teleworking day late last month. It was dreary and cool and while this yummy chicken noodle soup cooked away in the crock pot, I just wanted to cozy up inside with this sweater and scarf combo.

Check and Mate: My Favorite Transitional Piece of Clothing

ootd-09182014-2

I bought these crops at the end of last winter and I must say: cropped pants are probably one of my favorite transitional pieces.

Being a relatively tall girl, I never in a million years thought I’d think those words, let alone write them. You’d think the ongoing trauma of trying to find pants that are actually long enough would turn me off from anything cropped, but frankly I’m thankful they’re in style.

The great thing about cropped pants is that they look great for work and they keep you comfortable during chilly morning walks to the office. I have these awesomely versatile navy ones and another with a really fun print. If you’re in the market, I definitely suggest buying a pair (or two).

Fall-Ready

ootd-09152014-2

I don’t think I ever would have worn this color-combination before I started blogging. Red and blue together are generally a little too…4th of July for my taste. However, this deep burgundy paired with my navy blazer and (new!) shiny leggings makes me think of fall. I love the rich hues together and this is definitely one I’ll wear again!

I also wanted to give a quick shout-out to my hubby. Today is his birthday! So, happy birthday, toots. Love you STG! 😉

Long and Flowy Maxi

ootd-08192014-1

This was the first maxi dress I ever purchased. Before this one, I always struggled with maxi-anything because I could never find them in long enough lengths. Fortunately, Old Navy makes tall sizes and when I saw this baby online in my size (a couple years ago!) I scooped it up immediately. The length is perfect and so is the pretty, light fabric. We all know how I feel about ruffles and as far as I’m concerned, they’re an added bonus on this dress!

Royal

ootd-08072014-1

Royal blue is probably my favorite color. Next to purple, that is. Something about this jewel-toned hue just draws me in. I loved this shirt the second I saw it in TJ Maxx. From the soft, flowy fabric to the buttons to the contrasting shoulders, this top had me at hello first glance. Paired with my pretty lace skirt and I’m feeling very regal today.

Accessorize

ootd-08042014-1

I’ve never been big on accessorizing and the reason is multifaceted. I think part of it is my aesthetic–I gravitate toward simplicity–and another (arguably larger part) is that I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to adding flare to my wardrobe.

But there is just something about a pretty necklace that really completes an ensemble, particularly when it’s a simple one like today’s outfit. I went shopping recently to find a necklace to wear to my friend’s upcoming wedding and when I saw this beauty in Target, I had to buy it. This isn’t the one I’m planning to wear to the wedding, but it’s just so geometric and cool! The checkout girl was coveting it so hard, I thought she might try to nab it. Can’t say I blame her.

Dressy Top

ootd-07312014-1

I have a confession to make: this top is actually a dress. Whether it’s adding a button-down underneath, a turtleneck over top or tucking it into a skirt, layering a dress is one of my favorite ways to add versatility to it.  I fell in love with this particular dress years ago when I saw it at Target. The embroidered scoop neckline is nothing like anything else in my closet and the bright blue is one of my favorite colors. Over the years I’ve decided that it’s a little to short to really work as a dress for me, but it totally works as a top. Maybe it was always too short and I just wore it anyway…? o_O

Risky

ootd-07282014-3

I have had both pieces of this outfit in my closet for a long time. Since they’re in the same color family, the skirt and shirt have been near one another in my closet for what feels like forever. I always hesitate to wear them together because they’re both boxy/flowy and I try to limit myself to one boxy/flowy item per outfit. See my go-to fashion equation, here. As you can see, I took the risk and wore a color-blocked blouse with a patterned skirt today. This is one of those outfits that I like to think looked better in person than it did when I photographed it. But maybe not…

Colorful

ootd-07172014-4

You may or may not have seen my inspiration for this outfit when I pinned it a couple weeks ago. I was really excited that I had all the pieces to put it together. It is such a fun, colorful and (arguably most importantly) comfy ensemble.

And my shoes. Let’s talk about the greatest flats in the history of flats. These adorable New Balance for Nine West flats are one of my all-time favorite pairs of shoes. I was on the metro several years ago and saw a girl wearing them. The second I got home, I looked them up and ordered my own pair. Sadly, they don’t exist anymore. I have searched high and low and have come up empty-handed again and again. I’ve basically worn these into the ground and about a year ago I thought, “Yeah, I should really get rid of these shoes.” But I couldn’t do it. So I threw them in the trunk of my car so they could be my in-case-I’m-wearing-heels-and-get-a-flat-tire-or-my-car-breaks-down-and-I-need-to-walk-several-miles flats. You have a pair of those, right? Needless to say, I pulled them out, dusted them off and put them on with this outfit because I just felt like they fit with the cool, comfy vibe.

Knock Off

ootd-07142014-knees

Here it is again; my target dress that looks like it might be a DVF. From far away. I love this dress. The colors are right up my alley, it’s extremely well-made and it’s surprisingly versatile. Plus, the light, stretchy fabric is perfect for hot, humid days. Speaking of, will these ever end? I’ve started to see a lot of bloggers writing about fall fashion finds and I’m definitely looking forward to cooler weather ahead!
