I would like to start out this post with a PSA: This dress looks better in person that it does in photographs. There. Now I feel better. Kind of.

I love the idea of this dress and the first time I put it on I really liked it, but the couple times I’ve actually worn it in public, I haven’t really been into it. So, what’s the rule? 3 strikes you’re out? For me it’ll probably be a 3 strikes and you’re relegated to teleworking days sort of arrangement. Do you have any pieces that you want to like, but just can’t seem to find the right way to wear them? Tell me about it in the comments!

Business Casual Maxi Dress

ootd-10162014-1

I really love maxi dresses. They’re like wearing pajamas, but better. They’re perfect for lots of occasions, but I struggle with wearing this particular dress to work. It’s pretty casual, so over the next few months I’m going to try remixing it with dressier pieces to make it business casual appropriate. Fortunately I work in an environment where “business casual” is sometimes more casual than business, but I still try to look dressy…ish. Without further ado, here’s my first attempt.

What to Wear: Casual Fall Wedding

ootd-10072014-1

I am obsessed with this dress. It goes kind of perfectly with my new pashmina, which I am also obsessed with. I got this dress over the summer from Nordstrom Rack (FOR $20 DOLLARS!!!). I planned to wear it to a friend’s wedding, but it is a little more casual than that particular occasion called for.

However, this is definitely something I would wear to a casual fall wedding.

Dressed Up PJs

ootd-08212014-5

I purchased this dress because it was on sale and have been looking for a long, gray maxi for a while. Ever since I saw this pin. I have been toying with the idea of turning this baby into a short-sleeved dress because the current sleeve situation is sort of weird. I think it may actually be a little more versatile with shorter sleeves…what do you think?

Long and Flowy Maxi

ootd-08192014-1

This was the first maxi dress I ever purchased. Before this one, I always struggled with maxi-anything because I could never find them in long enough lengths. Fortunately, Old Navy makes tall sizes and when I saw this baby online in my size (a couple years ago!) I scooped it up immediately. The length is perfect and so is the pretty, light fabric. We all know how I feel about ruffles and as far as I’m concerned, they’re an added bonus on this dress!

Dry Clean Only

ootd-07142014-knees

There is a Nordstrom Rack within walking distance to my work. One of my coworkers and I head over about once a month and I have been gravitating towards the maxi dresses like crazy recently. In fact, I have this exact dress in two colors. There’s just something so easy about maxi dresses. With relatively little effort–I mean, hello? You don’t even have to shave your legs!–you look spot-on. Plus, they transition really easily from day to night.

The only downside is this one is dry-clean only…Since it’s a cotton/spandex dress, that translates to a gentle wash in cold water and a hang dry. I’m such a rule-breaker.

Shopping Stripes

I wore this one Friday when I went to pick up my sister from school and we grabbed lunch and went shopping for another friend’s bridal shower gift.

This dress was a gift I received earlier this month. I freakin’ love maxi dresses. They’re so cool and EASY. Plus, this one basically feels like pajamas. What is better than wearing pj’s in public and looking like you actually made an effort? That’s right–NOTHING.

Cinco de Mayo!

While I usually subscribe to the I hate Mondays school of thought, today is not just any Monday: it’s Cinco de Mayo! And you know what that means: may flowers and Monday night margaritas! Woo!

Sunday Brunch

ootd-blackmaxi-full

I wore this dress to family brunch a couple weeks ago. See that face? That’s the face of a girl who can hardly contain her excitement. Why, you ask? I looooove brunch. We went to one of our favorite brunch spots, Mrs. K’s Tollhouse, for their all-you-can-eat brunch buffet. Which means I ate four plates of food. So, this dress was strategic. It’s cute and dressy enough for brunch, while it expands enough to allow for my gluttonous tendencies. Yay brunch!
