Happy Halloween!!!

Halloween is the start of my favorite time of year. We had our annual Halloween party last weekend and it was a blast. I was Medusa and I made my own costume, like I do pretty much every year. I used the green maxi you might recognize from this post. I spray painted an old belt and bunch of snakes that I got from the dollar store. I also added “scales” to my face with green eye shadow.

Quick tip for adding scales: use fishnet stockings! Just slip them over your head (yes-you look ridiculous while you’d doing it) and dab on eye shadow.

BONUS! Here are our pumpkins that we carved on Tuesday night:IMG_20141028_212837

Happy Halloween!

Kara and James’ Wedding

I recently had the honor of being in one of my best friends’ wedding.

Today just so happens to be her new hubby’s birthday, so I thought it fitting to post about it today. Happy birthday, JB!

Steve met James in high school and they bonded over BMX bikes and Jame’s two busted knees. They became fast friends, so when I started dating Steve, I met James.

Kara and I were roommates in college. As soon as we met, we just clicked. We got one another’s sense of humor and spent countless hours together.

One day during my senior year, James texted me asking what I was up to. When I said nothing, he told me to come downstairs and open the door because he was at my house! Kara was in the kitchen between classes grabbing some dinner. We sat and chatted for a bit and as soon as he left, he texted me, “Who is your pretty spaghetti-eating roommate??”

I’m pretty sure I squealed when I told her. They went on their first date shortly thereafter. And as they say, the rest is history.

The ceremony and reception were held in her aunt and uncle’s sprawling back yard on a hot, but beautiful June day. It was basically like a huge backyard party–corn-hole, horseshoes and an ice cream truck included! Kara and James DIY’d a ton of the decorations and details and I remember seeing the venue for the first time on the wedding day and thinking it was absolutely perfect. The big, shady trees; the decorations; the weather; everything. It all contributed to the laid back, fun vibe.

I know what you’re thinking: more dots? More sheer dots? And the answer is: yes, more dots. I love polka dots. Almost as much as I love stripes and ruffles. There’s just something so fun and summery about them, amirite? The fact that this top combines not only one, but two of my favorite fashion elements makes it a winner in my book! What do you think? Any favorite prints, patterns or fabrics?

To the Lake!

My hubby and I and our two Border Collies went on vacation to Mineral, VA a few weeks ago. We had an awesome time. It was 5 days of pure bliss; the most relaxing vacation I can remember taking in a long time. The pups were beyond exhausted at the end of every day. Talk about dog tired by the five o’clock hour. Here are a few photos from our trip! If you are ever looking for a place to vacation, Lake Anna is where it’s at.

Kitchen Face Lift

Happy Monday! I hope you had a lovely weekend. Spring is finally in the air! If you’re like me that means, in part: cleaning, upgrading and renovating! Last spring we decided to give our kitchen a face lift, so in lieu of an outfit post, I wanted to share some photos today!

You see, our kitchen has “good bones.” It’s a large room, but was made with cheap, builder-grade materials. Here’s what our kitchen looked like when we moved into our house:

Not horrible–in fact: a blank slate! It was nothing to write home about, though, that’s for sure! As you can see, this is one of the photos from the for sale listing.

As soon as we moved in (back at the end of 2010), I painted the walls…

The color is called Oregano and it’s a Behr Premium paint color.

Last year, I decided that I was ready for another change–and more importantly ready to utilize the space a little better!

So, we removed all the cabinet doors, painted the cabinet frames and started priming the walls…

Goodbye Oregano!!

Hello, Fresh Praline!

Meanwhile, my poor husband was stuck in the garage, painting the cabinet doors…

He already has an air compressor, so we just bought a paint spraying gun and a couple gallons of Benjamin Moore Advance paint. This process took a LONG time–about 4 weeks of painting every weekend. You can’t see it here, but we set up a whole paint booth and had a method that consisted of three “sets” of cabinet doors. One set was lined up against one plastic-lined wall, another set was on a ladder in the the sunshine (to help dry) and the other was against this wall (getting ready for another coat of paint). We put two coats of paint on the fronts and backs of each door. This photo was taken pretty close to the end.

After we finished painting the doors, we installed some nickel hardware because fingers + white cabinets = potentially gross.

After a few long months of waiting for our contractor (who just happens to be one of Steve’s best friends) to be free, I finally took to Home Depot with my paint chip in hand to find flooring, counter-tops and the tile for our tile back splash. Here’s what I decided:

Four very long days later, my kitchen was finally complete.

I’m sorry I don’t have more photos of the process, but the face lift only took about four (yes, FOUR!) days and I was in a constant state of going back to Home Depot to pick up this, that or the other thing and trying to navigate my way around the kitchen appliances that we had to move into the living room.

When it was finished, I sat at my new kitchen island and just took it all in. During the facelift, my house was a mess and I was cranky, but in retrospect it was an extremely short amount of time and my kitchen. Whew. I freaking LOVE it.

The Wedding Post

Here’s the post I’m sure you’ve all been waiting for…

As I mentioned in one of my posts prior to my hiatus, I got married on October 20, 2012.

I had a lot of fun planning our wedding. I’m a very decisive person (most of the time) so I didn’t really have any trouble planning.

The wedding day went off without a hitch. The weather was perfect, everyone showed up and at the end of the day, I was officially married to by best friend.

Here are a handful of shots!

Engagement Photos

Hello all! I am so happy to be back and blogging again! Before I move forward with outfit posts and giveaways and all that fun stuff, I wanted to catch you up a little bit on what I’ve been up to. The most exciting and certainly one of the best things to happen to me during my hiatus was that I got engaged and (spoiler alert:) married.

I wanted to share our engagement photos with you all…

After we got engaged, my dear friend (and future bridesmaid) Amber, of ADG Photography took our engagement photos. I was so excited and immensely grateful when she called dibs on taking these shots. She did a beautiful job and my series of wedding posts wouldn’t be complete without these. More photos on Facebook.

Fresh Start (kinda)

Happy new year!

Welcome back 🙂 It’s been a long time, but I’ve missed you all dearly.

Since my last post, I’ve been a busy girl! We got another dog, I got hitched to my best friend and the man of my dreams, we’ve traveled to every state on the west coast, we updated our kitchen…and so much more.

The blog will be returning with giveaways, reviews and outfit posts before you know it.

Coming up over the next couple weeks, you’ll get to see guest posts from these awesome ladies: Lisa of Respect the Shoes and  Lyddie of Chic on the Cheap.

Thanks to all who have kept in touch and supported UnraveledThreads over the years. I’m excited to be back!

New outfit posts will start in March!
